Abstract:
Botanical illustration is an interdisciplinary manifestation that bridges science and art. With plants as its core illustrating subject, it precisely captures and reconstructs their morphological characters and anatomical structures, following the true proportions of living organisms and specimens. It serves essential purposes in plant taxonomy, species identification, and scientific communication. Rooted in scientific precision and animated by artistic beauty, it stands as a profound synthesis of science and art. Traversing through stages of germination, formation, and development, botanical illustration has evolved from mere practical documentation into an independent art form that seamlessly unifies scientific and aesthetic pursuits. In China, pioneers such as Feng Chengru and Zeng Xiaolian propelled its indigenous evolution by blending various Chinese and Western unique techniques. Today, in the digital and artificial intelligence era, botanical illustration retains its irreplaceable values. It will continue to play a vital role in advancing scientific research, communication, cultural heritage, and aesthetic enrichment. By embracing interdisciplinary fusion and proactive innovation, botanical illustration will serve even more effectively as a bridge—connecting science and art, as well as nature and humanity.
