Abstract:
This article is an informal essay based on the author’s experience attending an academic conference in Moscow in 2009, documenting a series of observations and reflections. It recounts the journey from arriving in Moscow and encountering traffic congestion to participating in the conference at a suburban resort. The author describes the troublesome incident of having their credit card swallowed by an ATM and the complicated process of retrieving it. Additionally, the author mentions phenomena such as Moscow police frequently checking passports and the unfriendly attitude of service staff, drawing a contrast with childhood impressions of the Soviet Union. The essay concludes with visits to the Kremlin and Red Square, expressing mixed feelings about Moscow—fulfillment of a long-cherished wish, as well as lamentation over the gap between reality and ideals. The writing is vivid throughout, revealing cultural differences and distinct marks of the era through detailed descriptions.
