Building Towers with Carrots and Toothpicks: Exploring Elementary School Innovation
Projects from an Interdisciplinary Perspective
Based on years of teaching practice, this article uses the "Carrot and Toothpick Tower" project as a concrete case to establish an interdisciplinary project-based learning model driven by problem-solving, task decomposition, technology empowerment, and a closed-loop evaluation system. The project organically integrates knowledge from multiple disciplines such as science, mathematics, engineering, and technology. Through five progressive phases—project initiation, design planning, construction practice, optimization and improvement, and final presentation—and supported by information technology tools, it focuses on cultivating students' abilities in scientific inquiry, engineering practice, and teamwork. After multiple rounds of classroom implementation and school-level competitions, the project achieved a 100% student participation rate and task completion rate. Students demonstrated significant improvement in their ability to apply knowledge and solve problems. This project provides a practical case that can be directly referenced and easily replicated for implementing innovation activities in elementary schools.
