Alternate
When I returned to my hometown during the heavy snow, I saw a newly built Christian church in the old village. Its spire pierced the sky but seemed to cut off the vitality. The greetings and expectations from my relatives at home were like a repeat of previous years, making me feel as if I were acting out an old script. I recalled the day of my grandfather's memorial service seven or eight years ago. The sudden change from the smiling faces of my family to the white cloth covering the courtyard, and the kneeling rituals I completed in my ignorance, all contained complex feelings about the inheritance of bloodlines. What's more, the rule that "women are not allowed to visit graves" only added to my helplessness. When I passed by the graveyard, my brief moment of freedom was shattered by the cry of "That's a graveyard." The gossip about Tongtong's family life after her father's death and the compensation they received reflected the outdated concepts that shackle women. Now that the deserted old house has been sold and there are no more incense sticks burning in front of the Bodhisattva statue, even though I claim to be an atheist, I can still feel those invisible constraints lurking in the corners.
